Oaxaca Food Weekend: Two Michelin Tables, Markets and Time to Explore

An Oaxaca food weekend should leave room for both a carefully booked restaurant and the everyday cooking that gives the city its character. This plan puts Levadura de Olla and Los Danzantes on separate days and keeps a market visit flexible. It is a short, practical shortlist rather than a claim to cover every worthwhile kitchen.
Choose the meal that anchors each day

Both restaurants hold one Michelin star in the 2026 selection. Los Danzantes also holds a Green Star, a separate sustainability distinction. A restaurant can have both; a Green Star is not a second culinary star.
Friday: arrive without a rigid dinner deadline
Choose a central hotel after checking its exact address, access and noise expectations. Keep the arrival meal flexible if a delayed flight could cost you a deposit. Walk the nearby streets, settle into the city and save the most important reservation for a full day.
When comparing boutique hotels, ask whether the room faces a street or courtyard, whether there are stairs and how vehicles reach reception. A beautiful photograph does not answer those practical questions. Travelers with mobility needs should confirm access directly.
Saturday: Levadura de Olla and a slower afternoon
Levadura de Olla is listed at Manuel García Vigil 304. Michelin highlights Barrios García’s connection to traditional Oaxacan recipes and her hometown, San Mateo Yucutindoo. Let the current menu guide your order rather than expecting a dish from an old photograph.
Reserve directly through the restaurant’s official channel and keep the afternoon free of tight departures. If you want a separate mezcal experience, confirm its duration and transport before adding it; a tasting is not a reason to rush your main meal. Ask about nonalcoholic options without assuming everyone wants a pairing.
Sunday: a market visit and Los Danzantes
Use our Benito Juárez and 20 de Noviembre market guide to plan the morning. Choose a small tasting rather than a full feast if you have a restaurant booking later. Markets and fine dining are complementary ways to understand a destination, not competing levels of authenticity.
Los Danzantes Oaxaca is listed at Macedonio Alcalá 403, Interior 4. Its courtyard setting offers a different context for the second main meal. Check the precise reservation location: the restaurant name also exists outside Oaxaca. On a departure day, ask the expected meal duration and leave enough time for luggage and the airport journey.
Keep the reservations realistic
- Confirm whether you are booking an à la carte meal or a fixed menu.
- Share allergies before arrival and ask about substitutions.
- Ask for current prices, drinks and deposit terms.
- Check cancellation deadlines and holiday openings.
For December celebrations, request the actual menu and service date in writing. This itinerary does not confirm Christmas or New Year’s opening. If only one of the two restaurants has availability, build the weekend around it and use the other day for our Oaxaca dishes and food experiences instead of chasing a second trophy booking.
