Atelier: Latin American Designers, Workshops & Craft
Atelier is Jet Set LatAM’s guide to the people and processes behind Latin American design. Explore working studios, artisan workshops and independent labels, then plan a visit that respects the maker’s time. A boutique, a showroom and a production workshop offer different experiences: our guides help you choose the right one.
Choose your way into the work
Fashion and appointments. Start with a designer whose work you want to understand. Confirm whether an appointment covers shopping, fittings or a studio visit; an open store does not automatically mean access to the workroom. For a specific example, read our Alexandre Herchcovitch atelier appointment guide for São Paulo.
Textiles and craft. Look beyond the finished piece to fiber, technique, authorship and care. Begin with our Latin American textiles and craft guide, then use a destination story to plan your afternoon.
Objects and interiors. Ceramics, woven pieces and small design objects can be meaningful purchases when their materials and practical needs suit your home. Explore home and design shops across Latin America. Ask about intended use, cleaning, dimensions and packing before deciding.
Explore by destination
Mexico City: discover Carla Fernández’s approach to contemporary Mexican fashion. Use the profile to understand the design language; verify current store and appointment details directly before setting out.
Oaxaca: our Oaxaca shopping guide introduces contemporary fashion and ceramics in the city. A village workshop is a separate outing: give it time for the journey, demonstration and conversation rather than treating it as another quick shop.
Cusco: follow our San Blas artisan-workshop and shopping guide for ceramics, textiles and questions that help establish who made a piece.
Buenos Aires: explore MAYDI’s knitwear story. For garments, consider how the fiber feels, how the piece moves and whether its care requirements fit your life at home.
Before you book an atelier visit
- Confirm the exact location, date, language and visit format. Ask whether you will meet a guide, a retail team or the maker; do not assume a personal meeting with the founder.
- Separate the cost of admission or a demonstration from a practical class, materials and purchases. Ask for the cancellation terms before paying for an activity.
- For accessibility needs, ask specifically about steps, seating, toilets, surfaces and the distance between demonstration areas. General visitor information is not a verified accessibility assessment.
- Ask permission before photographing people, tools or unfinished work. Stay within the visitor areas and keep children clear of working equipment.
- For a commission, agree dimensions, materials, lead time, revisions, payment stages and delivery in writing. A holiday departure date is not a production deadline.
- Before buying, request maker information, a receipt, care guidance and suitable packing. Obtain a shipping quote separately if the piece will not travel safely in your luggage.
Build the rest of your design trip
Use our Latin American Fashion Designers hub to discover labels and our Boutique Shopping hub for city routes. Choose one meaningful appointment, leave room for a meal and keep the practical details of bringing a piece home in mind.
Editorial note: this is a researched planning collection, not a claim of firsthand visits. Confirm current access, hours and availability with each maker before travel.
