Jet Set LatAM · Style Guide
Cartagena is hot. Not “pleasantly warm” — hot, humid and gloriously sticky, with the kind of afternoon sun that makes you rethink every synthetic fiber you own. It is also one of the best-dressed cities in the Caribbean, where linen sets, statement earrings and flowing color are practically the dress code.
The trick is looking effortless while sweating discreetly. Here is what to wear in Cartagena, from cobblestone mornings to rooftop nights.
The fabric rule: natural, loose, light
Temperatures sit around 30 °C most of the year, and the humidity rarely takes a day off. Linen, cotton poplin, silk and lightweight viscose are your friends. Polyester is not. Choose loose silhouettes that let air move — wide-leg trousers, midi dresses, oversized shirts — and lean into the city’s palette: white, terracotta, saffron, cobalt.
What to wear in the Walled City
Days are for wandering pastel streets, ducking into boutiques and stopping for a limonada de coco. A breezy midi dress or a linen co-ord with flat leather sandals is perfect. Add a wide-brim hat and sunglasses; shade is a luxury here. If you plan to shop, start with our designer boutiques in the Walled City — many travelers arrive with a half-empty suitcase on purpose.
Getsemaní
Murals, street art and a more relaxed, bohemian mood. Shorts and a loose shirt are fine here, as are sneakers if you are walking a lot. Bring a small crossbody for evening plaza-hopping.
Island and beach days
Boat trips to the Rosario Islands or Barú mean salt, sun and spray. Wear your swimsuit under a cover-up, pack a dry bag, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat that will not fly off at speed. A sarong doubles as a towel, a skirt and a shade cloth.
Dinner and rooftops
Cartagena dresses up after dark. Think silk slip dresses, a linen suit, bold earrings and a block heel or embellished flat — stilettos and cobblestones do not get along. Restaurants are often air-conditioned, so a light shawl is smart. Planning a big night? See our where to eat in Cartagena guide.
