Few hotels in the Caribbean carry as much history as the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara. Inside Cartagena’s Walled City, steps from Plaza de San Diego, this was the Convent of Santa Clara for more than two centuries — and you can still feel it in the cloister, the arches and the thick colonial walls.
A convent with a past
The convent of the Poor Clares dates to the early 1600s, and the nuns lived here until the 19th century. Gabriel García Márquez visited during exhumations at the convent in 1949, an experience that later shaped one of his novels — and his own Cartagena house stands right next door.
The rooms
Roughly 120 rooms and suites are spread between the original convent and a later Republican-era wing. Some face the cloister gardens, others look toward the Caribbean. Expect Sofitel’s signature beds and pillow menu; the top suites showcase work by Colombian artists such as Fernando Botero and Olga de Amaral.
Pool, dining and bar
- The pool: one of the largest in the historic center, a rare luxury inside the walls.
- El Claustro: breakfast and casual meals beneath the cloister arches.
- Restaurante 1621: the fine-dining room, named for the year the convent was founded.
- El Coro Lounge Bar: cocktails in the former choir loft.
Location
The hotel sits in the San Diego neighborhood of the old city, about ten minutes from the airport, with the walls, the sea and the boutiques all walkable. Explore our designer boutiques guide and where to eat in Cartagena.
