Cartagena’s Walled City could keep you busy for days, but some of its best experiences are just beyond the walls: turquoise islands, a village with an extraordinary history and a volcano full of warm mud. Here are the day trips worth leaving town for.
Rosario Islands
A national park archipelago of 27 small islands, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by boat. Expect clear water, coral reefs and snorkeling, plus beach clubs that sell day passes on Isla Grande, the largest island. Go with a reputable operator, leave early and return by mid-afternoon when the sea gets choppier.
Playa Blanca, Barú
The white-sand beach on Isla Barú is reachable by road or boat. It is beautiful and can be very busy, especially on weekends — go on a weekday or stay overnight to enjoy it after the crowds leave. Nature lovers can pair it with the aviary on Barú.
San Basilio de Palenque
About an hour to an hour and a half from the city, Palenque is considered the first free town in the Americas, founded by Africans who escaped slavery. Recognized by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage, it preserves its own language, music and traditions. A guided visit is one of the most meaningful days you can spend in Colombia.
Totumo mud volcano
About an hour north of Cartagena, El Totumo is a small cone of warm, mineral-rich mud you climb into and float in — truly strange and very fun. Bring an old swimsuit and small bills for the optional massage and rinse offered by locals.
Bioluminescent plankton tours
Evening boat trips near the islands take you to waters that glow when you swim. Best on dark, moonless nights.
