Holbox is what happens when an island refuses to hurry. The streets are sand, the traffic is golf carts and bicycles, and the most stressful decision of the day is whether to watch the sunset from a hammock or a beach bar. It sits within the Yum Balam nature reserve off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean.
Here is how to plan Isla Holbox — the getting there, the wildlife seasons and the slow, salty days in between.
How to get to Holbox
Drive or take a bus from Cancún to the port of Chiquilá — roughly two to two and a half hours — then hop a passenger ferry for the short crossing, about 20–25 minutes. Two companies, Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos, run frequent departures. Cars stay on the mainland; parking lots near the pier handle that. Private transfers from Cancún airport are the easiest option if you are carrying luggage.
When to go
- Whale shark season: roughly mid-May to mid-September, when the world’s biggest fish arrive to feed on plankton.
- Bioluminescence: visible on dark nights year-round, but best in summer around the new moon.
- Flamingos: often seen in spring through early fall in the island’s lagoons and shallows.
- Hurricane season: late May to early November, peaking around August to October — get travel insurance.
- Dry, breezy and pleasant: November to April, with calmer crowds outside holidays.
Things to do on Holbox
Swim with whale sharks
Full-day boat trips head out to find them in season. Choose a licensed operator that follows the reserve’s rules on group size and distance — Holbox’s whale sharks are protected, and responsible tours keep it that way.
The Three Islands tour
A classic half-day boat trip to Isla Pasión’s sandbar, Isla Pájaros (a bird sanctuary viewed from a walkway) and the Yalahau freshwater spring. Bring cash, water and reef-safe sunscreen.
Glow-in-the-dark water
Join a guided bioluminescence tour or walk toward Punta Cocos on a moonless night. Splash the water and watch it light up.
Punta Mosquito sandbar
At low tide, you can wade along the sandbar east of town — watch for flamingos and pelicans and check tide times before you go.
What to eat
Holbox is a fishing island, so think fresh ceviche, grilled catch of the day and the island’s famous lobster pizza. Downtown around the main square comes alive at night with street food and live music.
