Jet Set LatAM · Where to Stay
Everyone pictures the same Tulum: a candlelit cabana, a hammock and the Caribbean just past your toes. That Tulum exists — but it is only one of three very different places to stay, and choosing the wrong one can mean an hour of traffic every time you want dinner.
Tulum is split into the beach zone (the hotel strip), Aldea Zamá (the in-between neighborhood) and Tulum Town, also called el pueblo. Here is how to choose.
Tulum Beach (Zona Hotelera)
The beach road runs for several miles south of the ruins, lined with boutique hotels, beach clubs, yoga shalas and design-forward restaurants. This is the dreamy, barefoot Tulum — and the most expensive.
- Best for: honeymoons, short stays, travelers who want to wake up to the ocean.
- Know before you go: the road can be congested at night, some hotels run on limited power and seaweed (sargassum) can affect beaches in warmer months. Ask your hotel about recent conditions.
- Names to look at: eco-luxury Sanara Tulum, adults-focused Mi Amor and its sister Mezzanine near the north end, and plenty of small cabana hotels farther south.
Aldea Zamá
A newer residential and hotel district between town and the beach. Expect jungle-wrapped villas, condos with pools and a growing number of cafés. It is quieter than town, closer to the sand and generally better value than the beach strip.
- Best for: longer stays, groups, families and travelers who want space and a pool.
- Names to look at: Jashita’s luxury villas, Náay Tulum and design-led newcomers like Copal.
Tulum Town (Pueblo) and La Veleta
Town is where locals live and where you will find taco stands, mezcal bars and the bus station. Hotels here are more affordable, and you are a bike ride or taxi from the beach. La Veleta, just south of the center, has become a pocket of boutique stays and restaurants.
- Best for: value seekers, foodies and travelers using Tulum as a base for cenotes and Cobá.
- Names to look at: Hotel Bardo, Una Vida and Layla Tulum.

Getting around
Bikes are popular between town and Aldea Zamá; taxis are needed for the beach road at night. Many travelers rent a car for cenote days. Plan dinner reservations near your base to avoid long rides.
