Jet Set LatAM · Shopping Guide
San Juan has malls with every luxury logo you know. But the more interesting souvenirs are made on the island: a guayabera from a Puerto Rican legend, a hand-fitted Panama hat, a dress from a young designer selling at a Santurce pop-up. Shopping local here supports a creative community that has rebuilt and reinvented itself in recent years.
Here are the Puerto Rican designers to know and the San Juan neighborhoods where you will find them.
The icons
Carlota Alfaro
Born in Santurce in 1933, Carlota Alfaro is known as the grande dame of Puerto Rican fashion. Her specialty is haute couture, her signature is a dramatic mermaid silhouette, and she founded a design institute to train new generations of designers.
Nono Maldonado
One of the island’s most renowned designers, best known for refined linen shirts and guayaberas, who has expanded into womenswear and interiors. A Nono Maldonado guayabera is the most elegant thing a man can bring home from San Juan.
Old San Juan
The pastel streets are full of galleries, artisan shops and a few genuine treasures.
- Olé — hand-fitting Panama hats on Calle San Francisco since 1977. Let them shape one for you.
- Con Calma — a shop and creative hub founded by designer Matilsha Marxuach, carrying local labels with a focus on fair, sustainable style.

Condado
San Juan’s fashion district runs along Avenida Ashford, mixing international labels with independent boutiques. Look for multi-brand shops that spotlight island designers, and the long-standing menswear boutique Monsieur.
Santurce
The creative heart of the city, with murals, galleries and markets. Santurce POP and similar pop-up markets bring together independent designers, jewelers and makers — check social media for dates. Pair it with our Santurce art and murals walk.
Malls with local edits
For variety under one roof, the Mall of San Juan and Plaza Las Américas carry international brands, and some spaces highlight locally designed fashion, jewelry and gifts.
