Jet Set LatAM · The first-timer edit
A first taste of Puerto Rico: old-city streets, beach time and a table full of local flavor.
San Juan combines a five-century-old walled city with city beaches, a serious food scene and some of the best day trips in the Caribbean. For US citizens it is also one of the easiest escapes in the region — no passport required, and the currency is the US dollar.

The neighborhoods
- Old San Juan — pastel colonial streets, blue cobblestones, and the massive forts of El Morro and San Cristóbal overlooking the Atlantic.
- Condado — the beachfront hotel strip, with restaurants and a lagoon for paddleboarding.
- Santurce — the creative quarter, known for street murals, galleries and La Placita’s lively evenings.
Where to stay
Stay in Old San Juan for history and walkability, or Condado and neighboring Ocean Park for beach time. Many visitors split a trip between the two.
What to eat
Planning meals around the historic district? Our Old San Juan coffee and lunch guide compares a focused shortlist, with links to current tourism and venue information.
Mofongo (mashed, fried plantain), lechón, alcapurrias from a roadside kiosk, and a piña colada in the city that claims to have invented it. The kiosks of Piñones, just east of the city, are a local favorite for fritters by the sea.
Day trips
El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, is about an hour away, with waterfalls and trails. After dark, kayak tours visit the bioluminescent lagoon at Fajardo, where the water glows when disturbed.
When to go
December to April is the driest, busiest season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, so travel insurance is worth considering then.
