Jet Set Shopping Notes · San Juan
An Old San Juan afternoon with purpose: a well-fitted hat, art with a maker’s story, and Puerto Rican coffee on Recinto Sur.

Old San Juan makes it easy to combine a few considered purchases with an unhurried wander. This edit stays on and around Fortaleza before finishing on Recinto Sur. It is about choosing a piece with a story, not assuming every colorful souvenir was made on the island.
Allow one to two hours for the two shops and a café pause. The five-minute walking estimate excludes browsing, crossings and time at the counter. Keep the route flexible around the weather and your wider Old San Juan plans.
Stop 1
Olé Puerto Rico
105 Calle Fortaleza, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Begin with the hat rather than buying one at the end of the day in a hurry. Compare fit, brim and weave, then ask where that particular hat was made. A Panama-style hat sold in Puerto Rico is not automatically Puerto Rican-made.
Stop 2
Puerto Rican Art & Crafts
204 Calle Fortaleza, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Browse paintings, prints, jewelry, ceramics and other craft pieces. Ask for the artist’s name and the material, especially if choosing a gift. Use 204 Fortaleza, the shop’s own address, rather than confusing it with a similarly numbered location on another street.
Stop 3
Café Cuatro Sombras
259 Calle Recinto Sur, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
End with coffee connected to Yauco. Puerto Rico’s tourism board describes a farm-to-cup operation and food options alongside the coffee, making this a flexible pause rather than a meal that needs to dominate the afternoon.

450 metres · about 5 minutes walking. Google Maps estimate checked September 27, 2026; browsing time is additional. Current road conditions and opening arrangements can change.
Buy thoughtfully, plan practically
For hats, ask about storage and packing before deciding that a brim will survive your suitcase. For prints, request protective packaging; for carved or ceramic pieces, ask about materials and care. A signed work or named maker gives a gift a useful story to carry home.
Current prices depend on the hat, artwork or craft piece. The verified sources did not provide a dependable range across these shops, so check the specific item in US dollars before paying. No tax or shipping exemption is assumed.
Concalma is another Puerto Rican label worth knowing, but its current storefront information points to Santurce. Treat it as a separate neighborhood outing, not an extra stop on this Old San Juan walking map.
