Most travelers pass through Guayaquil on the way to the Galápagos, but Ecuador’s largest city and main port rewards a stopover: a long riverside promenade, a painted hillside barrio, iguanas sunbathing in a downtown park and the haciendas that made Ecuador’s fine-flavor cacao famous.
This Guayaquil travel guide covers what to see, where to stay and eat, and the advisory zones to understand before you go.
The Malecón and Las Peñas
The Malecón 2000 is a landscaped riverside promenade along the Guayas River, with gardens, museums and cafés. At its northern end, the colorful barrio of Las Peñas climbs Cerro Santa Ana, with 444 numbered steps to a lighthouse and a sweeping view of the city and river.
Iguanas, museums and markets
In Parque Seminario, also called Iguana Park, land iguanas wander among the benches opposite the cathedral. The MAAC museum on the Malecón covers Ecuador’s pre-Columbian cultures and contemporary art.
Cacao and the Ruta del Cacao
Guayaquil’s wealth was built on cacao, and the surrounding Guayas province still grows Ecuador’s prized Nacional fine-flavor beans. Book a guided visit to a cacao hacienda on the Ruta del Cacao to see the process from pod to bar, and pick up single-origin Ecuadorian chocolate to take home.
Where to stay and eat
Mansión del Río is a boutique hotel in a restored 1920s riverside mansion, and the long-established Hotel Oro Verde is a reliable full-service choice. Many visitors stay across the river in Samborondón for its malls and restaurants. Eat encebollado, the tuna and yuca soup that is Guayaquil’s hangover cure, and the city’s famous crab, cracked at the table.
Good to know
- Galápagos gateway. Guayaquil has frequent flights to Baltra and San Cristóbal; a night here before or after is easy.
- Getting around. Use hotel transport or ride apps rather than street taxis.
- Climate. It’s hot and humid; the rainy season runs roughly January to April.
- Day trips. The beaches of the Ruta del Spondylus, such as Montañita and Salinas, are a few hours west.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: a blanket on the plane, a shawl at dinner
- Leather loafers: polished enough for dinner, sane on cobblestones
- Packing cubes: so the artisan finds fit on the way home
