Among the first on the list
The City of Quito was one of the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in 1978. Its historic center is among the best preserved in Latin America: a dense grid of churches, convents, plazas and houses set in a valley of the Andes, where Indigenous and European traditions met in architecture and art.
Start with the altitude
Quito sits at roughly 2,800 meters. Give yourself an easy first day, drink water, go slow on the hills and save the most demanding walks for the second or third morning. It is a city that rewards pacing rather than ambition.
Churches, plazas and the Quito School
Begin at the Plaza Grande and move outward. The gilded interiors of the city’s great churches, and the paintings and sculpture of the Quito School, are some of the reasons for the inscription. Confirm visiting hours and respect services; many churches charge a small entry fee.
Craft and design
Quito’s artisan workshops and design shops keep the city’s making traditions alive. Our guide to independent shopping and Ecuadorian design in Quito lists places to start, and if you continue south, our guide to buying a Panama hat in Cuenca covers another UNESCO city.
Plan practically
Use registered taxis or rideshare after dark, carry layers for quick changes in weather and keep valuables minimal in crowded areas. A locally led walk adds context that plaques alone cannot.
