Jet Set LatAM · Hotel Review
Most travelers pass through Guayaquil on the way to the Galápagos, but a night or two here is worth it, especially at Mansión del Río. The boutique hotel occupies a restored 1920s mansion on the Guayas River, at the foot of the colorful Las Peñas neighborhood, and is filled with European antiques and period details.
Here’s our Mansión del Río review and how to fit Guayaquil into your trip.
The house
Rooms are decorated in the style of a grand early-20th-century home, with antique furniture, chandeliers and high ceilings. Some look out over the river; ask for one when you book.
The neighborhood
Las Peñas is Guayaquil’s oldest quarter, with wooden houses, galleries and a staircase of 444 steps climbing Cerro Santa Ana to a lighthouse and city views. The Malecón 2000 riverfront promenade starts just beyond.
Galápagos stopover
Guayaquil is a main gateway to the Galápagos, so the Mansión works well as a characterful night before or after your flight to the islands.
Good to know
- Getting there. The airport (GYE) is around 15–20 minutes away.
- Climate. January to May is hot and rainy; June to December is drier and cooler.
- Taxis. Book through the hotel or an app rather than hailing on the street.
What to pack
- Leather loafers: for the Santa Ana steps
- Packing cubes: organize city and Galápagos gear
