La Candelaria: Bogotá’s Historic Heart

La Candelaria is where Bogotá began — a grid of colonial streets, colorful balconied houses, and plazas that have anchored the city since the 1500s. It’s the most walkable introduction to the capital, and the neighborhood where its museums, street art, and student energy all overlap.
Start at Plaza Bolívar
Bogotá’s central square is ringed by the Capitolio Nacional, the Palace of Justice, and the city’s cathedral — a good orientation point before wandering the surrounding streets.
Museums Within Walking Distance
La Candelaria holds an unusual concentration of world-class museums: the Museo del Oro, the Museo Botero, and the Museo Nacional are all a short walk from each other, making the neighborhood an easy full day on foot.
Chorro de Quevedo
Considered the founding site of Bogotá, this small plaza is now a hub of student cafés, street performers, and some of the neighborhood’s densest street art — worth slowing down for rather than rushing through.
A Practical Note
La Candelaria is best visited by day. It empties out and becomes noticeably less lively after dark — plan dinner elsewhere, in Chapinero or the Zona G.
