Latin American Fashion Weeks and Design Events Worth Planning a Trip Around

Timing a trip around a fashion week is the fastest way to see a country’s style scene in motion: the designers, the buyers, the street style and the parties all converge on one city for a few days. Latin America has a handful of well-established events that reward the effort, plus design and craft fairs that are just as rewarding for anyone who loves to shop. Dates shift every season, so treat this as a planning list and always check the official calendar before you book.
São Paulo Fashion Week, Brazil
São Paulo Fashion Week is the region’s heavyweight, a long-running showcase for Brazilian design that ranges from established houses to younger labels working with sustainable materials and regional craft. São Paulo itself is the ideal host: a vast, sophisticated city with serious restaurants, contemporary art and the boutique-lined streets of Jardins to fill the hours between shows.
Expect a strong emphasis on Brazilian identity: lightweight fabrics, bold color, beachwear that doubles as evening wear, and a growing number of designers working with Indigenous and regional craft communities.
- Why go — the scale and range of Brazilian fashion in one place, plus a city that rewards a long stay.
- Pair it with — a few days in Rio, or a beach escape down the coast.
Colombiamoda, Medellín
Organized by Inexmoda, Colombiamoda is one of the most important fashion trade events in Latin America, combining runway shows with a large business fair that draws buyers and press. It reflects Colombia’s deep textile and manufacturing heritage, and it is where you can see the country’s swimwear, resort and ready-to-wear talent side by side.
Medellín is at its best when it’s buzzing like this; base yourself in El Poblado or Laureles and leave time for the city’s leafy neighborhoods and mountain views.
Bogotá Fashion Week, Colombia
The capital’s own fashion week has become a focus for Colombian designers with a strong point of view, with plenty of attention to craft, sustainability and collaboration with artisan communities. Bogotá is a cool-weather city of museums, bookshops and excellent restaurants, which makes it an easy place to spend a long weekend around the shows.
Fashion Week México, Mexico City
Mexico City’s fashion week — long known as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week México — is the main platform for the country’s runway designers. The schedule tends to mix polished ready-to-wear with labels that reinterpret Mexican textile traditions, and the off-calendar presentations, pop-ups and showroom events around the city are often as interesting as the main program.
Mexico City’s design season: Zona Maco and Design Week México
If you care about design as much as clothes, Mexico City has two more dates to watch. Zona Maco is the city’s major contemporary art fair, with a design section and a busy program of satellite events and gallery openings. Design Week México brings installations, talks and studio openings across the city. Either one fills the city with collectors and creatives, and with them a wave of exhibitions, dinners and pop-ups.
- Why go — a concentrated dose of Mexican design, art and craft, and an easy excuse to shop Roma, Condesa and Polanco.
Buenos Aires Fashion Week, Argentina
BAFWeek has been a fixture of the Argentine calendar for years and remains a good window onto the country’s designers, from tailored, minimal ready-to-wear to more experimental work. In Buenos Aires, the best way to extend the experience is on foot: the independent studios and boutiques of Palermo Soho are where much of the city’s design energy actually lives.
Craft and dress: Expoartesanías and the Guelaguetza
Two events are not fashion weeks at all, yet they belong on any style-minded traveler’s list. Expoartesanías in Bogotá is Colombia’s great annual craft fair, bringing together artisans from across the country — Wayuu weavers, caña flecha braiders, jewelers, ceramicists and more — under one roof. It is one of the best opportunities anywhere to buy directly from makers.
In Oaxaca, the Guelaguetza is a celebration of the state’s Indigenous cultures, music and dance, and an unforgettable showcase of regional dress — embroidered huipiles, ribbons, flowers and all. It’s a cultural festival first, so go to watch and learn rather than shop, though Oaxaca’s textile villages and markets are close at hand.
Which event suits you?
Each of these events has its own personality. For pure runway spectacle and the broadest view of a national industry, São Paulo is hard to beat. For a sense of fashion as business — fabrics, manufacturing, swimwear, the buyers who decide what reaches stores — Colombiamoda is the most revealing. Mexico City’s design season suits travelers who want art, architecture, food and fashion in a single trip, while Buenos Aires appeals to anyone drawn to tailoring, leather and an independent studio culture. And if your interest is craft first, Expoartesanías and Oaxaca will show you the traditions that so many of the region’s designers draw from.
Whichever you choose, give yourself a few days on either side. The shows are a starting point; the real discoveries tend to happen in showrooms, markets and neighborhood boutiques once the crowds thin out.
Before you go
Most runway shows are invitation-only, but fashion weeks increasingly include public programming: talks, exhibitions, pop-up markets and designer sales. Follow the event and the designers you love on their official channels, which is where public tickets and side events are usually announced.
- Check the official calendar — dates and formats change from season to season.
- Book early — hotels near the venues fill quickly during big events.
- Plan showroom visits — many designers open their studios by appointment during fashion weeks.
- Dress the part, comfortably — expect long days and plenty of walking.
