First Timer’s Guide to Santiago

Santiago doesn’t get the immediate name recognition of Buenos Aires or Rio, and that’s part of its appeal — a modern, efficient Andean capital that’s equal parts gateway city and destination in its own right, with some of South America’s best wine country less than an hour away.
Getting Around
Santiago’s Metro is one of the best in Latin America — fast, clean, and easy to navigate. For views, take the funicular or cable car up Cerro San Cristóbal, the hill anchoring Bellavista.
Neighborhoods to Know
- Lastarria — bohemian, walkable, full of cafés, galleries and bookshops (pictured above)
- Providencia — leafy, residential, business-district practical
- Bellavista — nightlife and color, home to Pablo Neruda’s La Chascona
- Barrio Italia — design shops, antiques, and a slower pace
What to Eat
Try a completo (Chile’s elaborate hot dog, loaded with avocado, tomato and mayo) at least once, then head to the Mercado Central for fresh seafood — Chile’s Pacific coastline means ceviche and congrio here are the real thing.
Don’t Miss
- Cerro San Cristóbal — the city’s best skyline and Andes views
- Palacio de La Moneda — the presidential palace, with rotating art exhibitions in its cultural center
- Casablanca Valley wine country — see our full itinerary below
When to Go
September–November and March–May are the sweet spots — mild weather without summer’s heat or winter’s smog. Grape harvest in the wine valleys runs March–April, if timing a wine trip is a priority.
