Santiago + Casablanca Valley: A Wine Country Weekend

Chile is one of the world’s great wine countries, and Santiago is arguably the easiest base from which to experience it — several distinct valleys sit within an hour or two of the city, each with its own personality.

Casablanca Valley — Closest & Coolest

About 45 minutes from Santiago toward the coast, Casablanca’s cooler climate makes it Chile’s go-to region for crisp Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay — a contrast to the bolder reds most people associate with Chilean wine. It’s an easy half-day or full-day trip, with several wineries open for tastings and tours.

Maipo Valley — Closer, Bolder

Maipo sits practically in Santiago’s backyard and is Chile’s most historic wine region, known for structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Concha y Toro, one of the world’s largest and most recognizable wine producers, is based here and offers public tours and tastings of its estate.

Colchagua Valley — Worth the Extra Distance

Roughly two hours south, Colchagua is worth it for travelers with an extra day — bigger, more polished estates and a wine-focused town (Santa Cruz) built around the industry.

Planning the Day

Most visitors book a half- or full-day tour rather than self-driving between wineries, since tastings and driving don’t mix. Book ahead in peak season (harvest runs March–April) and confirm tasting fees, which vary by estate.
