Where to Stay in Cusco & the Sacred Valley

The right base in Peru’s Inca heartland comes down to one thing most travelers underestimate: altitude. Cusco sits at about 3,400 meters, while the Sacred Valley is several hundred meters lower. Split your nights well and the whole trip feels easier.
The short answer
Spend your first one or two nights in the Sacred Valley, one night in Aguas Calientes if you want Machu Picchu at opening time, and your final nights in Cusco. Our 4-day Cusco & Machu Picchu itinerary follows exactly this order.
Cusco
San Blas
Cusco’s artisan quarter climbs the hill above the Plaza de Armas in steep, cobbled lanes. Boutique hotels here tend to be small and characterful, with courtyards and views over the terracotta roofs. The trade-off is the climb — lovely on day four, hard work on day one.
The historic center
Stay near the Plaza de Armas and you can walk to the cathedral, Qorikancha and San Pedro market on flat-ish streets. Some of the city’s most memorable hotels occupy former convents and colonial mansions built on Inca foundations.
The Sacred Valley
Urubamba sits in the middle of the valley and has the widest choice of lodges, many set in gardens with mountain views and spa facilities — ideal for acclimatizing slowly. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca town and the main station for the Machu Picchu train, so it is the practical choice the night before an early departure. Písac, at the valley’s eastern end, is quieter and known for its market and hillside terraces.
Aguas Calientes
The small town below Machu Picchu is reachable only by train. It is not a place to linger, but one night here lets you take an early bus up to the ruins before the day-trippers arrive from Cusco.
Before you book
Reserve Machu Picchu entry tickets and train seats first — in high season, roughly May to September, both sell out — then fit your hotels around them. Compare Cusco and Sacred Valley hotels ↗ and see our Cusco & the Sacred Valley guide for what to pack and the tours worth booking.
