I arrived just before dawn, when the city was still wrapped in cool mountain air. Locals bustled to markets with baskets of fruit and flowers, and sunlight slowly illuminated the terracotta rooftops and surrounding peaks. Cusco is best explored slowly — allowing your body to acclimate to the altitude and your senses to soak in its layered history.
