First Timer’s Guide to Bogotá

Bogotá sits at 8,660 feet in the Andes, which means your first afternoon should be slow — the altitude is real. Once you’ve adjusted, the reward is a capital that’s gritty and elegant in equal measure: colonial streets, world-class museums, and a food and coffee scene with real depth.
Getting Around
The TransMilenio bus rapid transit system covers most of the city, but Uber and taxis are the easier option for visitors, especially at night. Traffic is heavy — budget more time than you think for cross-town trips.
Neighborhoods to Know
- La Candelaria — the colonial historic center, museums, street art (full guide below)
- Chapinero — creative, LGBTQ-friendly, strong nightlife and independent restaurants
- Usaquén — upscale and colonial-village-like, with a beloved Sunday flea market
- Zona T / Zona G — Bogotá’s dining and shopping core
What to Eat
Ajiaco — a hearty chicken and potato soup native to Bogotá — is the dish to order on a cold, rainy afternoon (of which there are many). Pair it with hot chocolate and cheese, chocolate santafereño, a genuinely strange and genuinely good local ritual. For produce, spices, and a real sense of the city’s food culture, spend an hour at Paloquemao market.
Don’t Miss
- Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) — one of the best museums in South America
- Monserrate — cable car or funicular up to a mountaintop church with sweeping city views
- Museo Botero — Fernando Botero’s own collection, free to enter
When to Go
Bogotá’s climate is mild and fairly consistent year-round, so it rarely dictates timing. December is a genuine highlight, when the city’s Christmas light displays (los Alumbrados) turn parks and rivers into elaborate installations.
