Comuna 13 & Medellín’s Culture of Transformation

No neighborhood tells Medellín’s story like Comuna 13. Once considered one of the most dangerous places in the world, it’s now an open-air museum of street art, outdoor escalators, and hip-hop culture — built, quite literally, by the community that lived through its hardest years.
Why the Escalators Matter
Installed in 2011, the outdoor escalators were a public infrastructure project meant to connect a hillside neighborhood cut off by geography and violence. They became a symbol of the city’s transformation — and today they’re lined with murals, graffiti, and vendors, climbing past homes that once sat at the center of the conflict.
What to Expect
Local guides — many of whom grew up in the neighborhood — lead walking tours that combine the history with the art, plus impromptu breakdance and hip-hop performances along the route. Go with a guide rather than alone; the context they add is most of the point. Wear comfortable shoes for the stairs and hills.
Respectful Visiting
This is a residential neighborhood with a difficult history, not a theme park. Ask before photographing people directly, tip your guide, and buy something from the vendors and artists along the way — tourism here is directly tied to the community’s economic recovery.
Pair It With
Comuna 13 is a half-day outing. Combine it with the Jardín Botánico or a Metrocable ride up to Parque Arví to round out the day.
