Choose a hotel that belongs to your trip
A design hotel can make a city trip feel more coherent. The building, objects and neighborhood become part of the experience, rather than a backdrop between outings. But beautiful photographs are only the beginning: the room you book, the street outside and the distance to the places you want to visit matter just as much.
This researched shortlist brings together five different approaches to design in Mexico City, São Paulo, Lima, Rio de Janeiro and Cartagena. It is not a ranking of all hotels in Latin America or a claim of personal stays. Use it to compare the kind of experience you want, then check the property’s current room details and policies. Our Boutique Shopping hub helps connect the stay to designers and objects beyond the hotel.
Mexico City: La Valise for an intimate Roma stay
La Valise Mexico City occupies a French-style townhouse in Roma Norte, with individually designed suites, bespoke furnishings, artwork and artisan objects. The property’s own site presents the rooms separately, which is the right way to compare them. A photograph of one suite should not become an assumption about every booking.
Choose this kind of stay when a smaller, art-filled setting and time in Roma are central to the trip. The official site currently describes its setting and experiences for guests aged 12 and over, so check the current age policy before booking. Ask about the exact suite, stairs or access needs, layout and any outdoor space that matters to you.
Build the afternoon around our existing Roma boutique walk, then explore the concept-store guide. Keep Polanco as a separate outing rather than assuming all city shopping is within the immediate neighborhood.
São Paulo: Hotel Unique for architecture as the main event
Hotel Unique makes the building itself part of the reason to stay. Its official design story identifies Ruy Ohtake’s architecture and connects the property with art, design and gastronomy. The curved exterior and circular openings give it a visual identity that belongs to São Paulo’s architectural conversation.
Choose it when you want a hotel with a strong architectural presence, then compare the current room categories on their own terms. Ask about the room’s layout, view, accessibility and the services included in your rate. A memorable facade does not answer the practical questions about where you will spend the night.
Use our São Paulo fashion weekend and Brazilian objects and design-store guide to build the rest of the stay. Plan transport between neighborhoods; an architectural hotel and an independent shopping district need not sit on the same short walk.
Lima: Hotel B for art and Barranco
Hotel B pairs a Belle Époque-style mansion with its own art collection in Barranco. The official site describes original works and installations throughout the property and offers art-focused experiences. Its contact page gives the address as Sáenz Peña 204.
Choose this stay when art and Barranco are the center of your Lima plans. Ask about the current art program and whether a curator-led experience requires advance booking. Compare the room categories carefully: a historic building can make spaces more individual, so confirm the exact features you need rather than relying on an overall gallery.
Our Barranco shopping guide connects the neighborhood with Puna and Dédalo. Follow the home and design edit for buying objects thoughtfully. Leave time to enjoy art without treating every work you see as a purchase opportunity.
Rio de Janeiro: Janeiro for a fashion-led view of Leblon
Janeiro describes a hotel curated by Oskar Metsavaht, with design and the Rio lifestyle at the heart of its identity. Its Leblon location makes it a different proposition from an inland city hotel: the coastal setting belongs to the decision.
Choose it when you want the beach neighborhood and a contemporary design approach together. Compare the actual room descriptions and view categories before booking. Check the current arrangements for dining, rooftop areas and any facilities you plan to use; their appearance in an image does not tell you whether access is included or requires a reservation.
Pair the stay with our Ipanema shopping guide for Brazilian resortwear and a focused browse. Leblon and Ipanema are related parts of a coastal trip, but you still need to plan the route and leave room for beach time. Use the Rio destination hub for the wider visit.
Cartagena: Casa San Agustín for the old city's architecture
Casa San Agustín presents a boutique hotel formed from three colonial houses, with contemporary comfort woven into its historic setting. This makes it a strong option to investigate when architecture and the Walled City are central to your stay.
Compare rooms and suites for the light, space and outdoor features you actually want. Ask about any access needs and the current use of shared areas. A historic property can offer character without every room sharing the same arrangement. Confirm dining separately if the restaurant is part of your plan.
The Cartagena designer-boutique guide provides both researched stops and clearly identified Jet Set trip memories. Use it to plan shopping around the heat, then keep an unhurried part of the day for the city itself. The best stay is one that makes those pauses easier.
Jet Set Notes: book the room, not only the image
Make a short comparison before paying: exact room category, bed configuration, access, noise considerations, included services, cancellation terms and the total cost for your dates. Ask whether the photographs represent your category or the hotel’s broader collection. A terrace or bath in one suite is not a guarantee for the entire property.
Check the neighborhood against your actual itinerary. A beautiful hotel can be the right choice even when transport is required, provided you have planned for it. Reserve any design tours, restaurant visits or appointments separately where needed. Do not assume that public access to a cafe means access to guest-only facilities.
These recommendations are based on official property information checked in October 2026. Confirm current details directly. For fashion-focused planning, continue with our seven shopping weekends; for designers, explore the Fashion hub.
