Valladolid is the Yucatán’s best-kept base: a small, pastel-colored colonial town halfway between Mérida and the Caribbean coast, with a cenote you can walk to from the main square and the region’s most famous Maya ruins within easy reach. It’s cheaper, calmer and more authentic than the beach towns, and wonderfully easy to explore alone.
Where to base yourself
Stay between the main plaza and the Calzada de los Frailes, the town’s prettiest street, which runs toward the San Bernardino convent.
Boutique hotels and guesthouses
Coqui Coqui Valladolid, a tiny hotel attached to the brand’s perfumery, is the town’s design icon (our Coqui Coqui guide). Casa Hamaca Guesthouse is a garden B&B with a warm, social breakfast, and the historic Mesón del Marqués on the main plaza is a classic colonial courtyard hotel.
Eating alone
Order lomitos de Valladolid, a local pork specialty, and cochinita at the market, then sit on a café terrace on the Calzada. Plaza-side restaurants are relaxed and easy for one.
Solo-friendly experiences
Swim in Cenote Zací, right in town, and the cathedral-like Suytun nearby. Arrive at Chichén Itzá at opening, before the coach tours, and climb the pyramid at Ek Balam where rules allow. Day trips to the pink lakes of Las Coloradas run with small groups.
