Mérida is the city people recommend when you say, a little nervously, “I think I want to go somewhere alone.” It is calm, friendly and famously easygoing, with pastel colonial streets, a serious food scene and a hotel style all its own: restored casas with a courtyard, a tiled plunge pool and maybe six rooms. Bring a book. You will finish it.
Where to base yourself
Stay in the Centro, around Santa Lucía, Santa Ana or Santiago, or along Paseo de Montejo, the grand boulevard of henequén-era mansions. Our Mérida neighborhood guide compares them.
Boutique casas and B&B-style stays
Casa Tavera has just seven suites in a restored Centro home, and it is the definition of a Mérida stay done right (our Casa Tavera guide). Rosas & Xocolate, in two pink mansions on Paseo de Montejo, adds a spa and a very good restaurant (read our review). Casa Lecanda is a small, elegant hotel with a pool-centered courtyard, and Mérida is full of guesthouses run by owners who will happily draw you a cenote map on a napkin.
Eating alone in Yucatán
Order cochinita pibil, sopa de lima and papadzules at La Chaya Maya, then book a modern tasting menu: Huniik is one of the city’s most celebrated tables (our Huniik guide). Mornings are for coffee and marquesitas in a plaza.
Shopping
Look for guayaberas, henequén bags, hammocks and embroidered huipiles. Our Mérida boutiques guide has the best independent shops.
Solo-friendly experiences
Small-group tours make the cenotes, the Maya city of Uxmal and the yellow town of Izamal easy to do alone. On Sundays, the Centro closes streets for music, dancing and food stalls. For a night out of town, see our Coqui Coqui Valladolid guide.
Solo safety, the practical version
- Mérida is relaxed, but use normal city sense at night and keep valuables close.
- Respect the heat. April and May are brutal; book a room with a pool and air conditioning.
- Start early. Visit Maya sites at opening, before the sun and the tour buses.
- Use ride apps or hotel taxis after dark.
What to pack
- Leather loafers: for dinner on Paseo de Montejo
- Cashmere travel wrap: for very enthusiastic air conditioning
- Packing cubes: room for the guayabera
