Getting to Asunción takes a little planning (no, there is probably not a direct flight from your city), but getting around once you’re here is refreshingly easy and cheap. Here is everything you need, from the airport curb to the lake towns. You can also compare flight options on Skyscanner.
The quick answer: fly into Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) in Luque, usually with a connection through a regional hub. The ride to Villa Morra or the center takes about 30 to 45 minutes. In the city, use ride-hailing apps; they are cheap, safe and reliable. For other cities, use the bus terminal or a private driver.
Flying to Asunción
Most international visitors connect through regional hubs such as Panama City, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Santiago or Lima, and there are routes from Europe via Madrid. Routes change often, so compare current options with the flight search on this page. Check entry requirements for your passport with official sources before you book.
From the airport to the city
- Ride-hailing app: the easiest option. Request from the arrivals area.
- Official taxi: available outside arrivals; agree on the price first.
- Hotel transfer: many boutique hotels can arrange one. See the best boutique hotels.
The airport is in Luque, home of Paraguay’s silver filigree. If you have time on your way out, stop and shop. See our Luque filigree guide.
Getting around Asunción
Ride-hailing apps
The way most visitors get around. Rides between Villa Morra and the center are short and inexpensive, and the app shows the price upfront. Use them at night instead of walking.
Walking
The historic center, the Costanera and Villa Morra’s streets are walkable by day. Sidewalks can be uneven and the heat is real, so plan walks for mornings and late afternoons. Try our historic center walking tour.
City buses
Cheap and everywhere, but routes are hard to figure out and buses get crowded. Fine for adventurous travelers; keep your belongings close.
Leaving Asunción
- Long-distance buses: from the Terminal de Ómnibus to Encarnación, Ciudad del Este and beyond. Choose the more comfortable service classes for long trips.
- Private driver: the best option for day trips that combine several towns.
- Car rental: available at the airport and in the city. Avoid driving at night on the highways, and expect heavy traffic leaving Asunción at rush hour.
Travel times from Asunción (approximate)
