Two things surprise people about style in Asunción. First, it is hot. Like, really hot. Second, people still look put together: pressed linen, neat sandals, good hair in 90% humidity (how?). So the goal is breezy but polished: think resort wear that could walk into a nice restaurant, not gym clothes that wandered off a cruise ship.
The quick answer: pack light, breathable natural fabrics (linen, cotton, ao po’i), comfortable sandals or espadrilles for uneven sidewalks, one or two dressier outfits for dinner and rooftops, a light layer for air conditioning, and a jacket if you travel from June to August. Cover shoulders and knees for churches.
How people dress in Asunción
Neat and smart-casual. Shorts are fine for daytime sightseeing, but locals dress up a little for dinner, and the bar scene in Villa Morra and Carmelitas leans stylish. Paraguayan designers love romantic, light pieces with lace and embroidery, which is the perfect local inspiration. See our list of Paraguayan fashion designers.
What to wear by season
Summer (December to February)
Highs around 34 °C and sudden storms. Loose linen dresses and shirts, wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sandals you can walk in, a compact umbrella and swimwear for the hotel pool.
Autumn and spring (March to May, September to November)
Warm days and pleasant evenings. Midi dresses, light trousers, a cardigan or light blazer for nights.
Winter (June to August)
Mostly mild and sunny, but cold fronts can drop temperatures sharply at night. Pack layers: knitwear, a light jacket or trench, closed shoes and a scarf.

Outfits for specific plans
- Historic center walk: breathable dress or linen set, flat sandals, hat, crossbody bag.
- Fine dining and rooftops: silk or linen dress, a statement earring (Luque filigree, ideally) and block heels. See our nightlife guide.
- Churches and Caacupé: shoulders and knees covered; a light scarf solves it.
- Day trips: comfortable shoes for cobblestones in Areguá, plus SPF and mosquito repellent.
