Nobody flies to Asunción for the shopping, which is exactly why the shopping is so good. No crowds of tourists, prices that make Buenos Aires look smug, and a design scene that is quietly mixing lace, linen and ao po’i into clothes you will actually wear at home. Bring an empty tote. Okay, two.
The quick answer: for international brands and air conditioning, go to Paseo La Galería or Shopping del Sol in the Aviadores del Chaco area. For boutiques, cafés and a slower afternoon, go to Paseo Carmelitas in Villa Morra. For crafts, go to Itauguá, Areguá and Luque. For pure chaos (and the cheapest chipa of your life), go to Mercado 4.
Where to shop, by neighborhood
Aviadores del Chaco and Santa Teresa: the mall belt
This is modern Asunción: glass towers, hotels and the city’s two big shopping centers. Paseo La Galería is the polished one, with international fashion, beauty counters and a cinema. Shopping del Sol next door is older and bigger, with department stores, Paraguayan chains and a food court where local families spend Sunday. Both are easy wins on a rainy or very hot afternoon (so, most afternoons from November to March).
Villa Morra and Las Mercedes: boutiques and coffee
Paseo Carmelitas is an open-air complex of boutiques, restaurants and bars, and it is the nicest place in town to browse without feeling like you are in a mall. Shopping Mariscal on Mariscal López is nearby for basics. The surrounding streets have independent stores, home décor shops and some of the city’s best cafés, which is important because shopping is thirsty work.
Centro: crafts and history
The old center around Palma street has craft shops selling ñandutí, ao po’i, leather goods and guampas (the cups for tereré). Prices are a little higher than in the craft towns, but it is the easiest option if you are only in the city. Combine it with our historic center walking tour.
Mercado 4: the city’s biggest market
Mercado 4 is a sprawling popular market selling produce, herbs for tereré, clothes, electronics and everything in between. It is fascinating and very local. Go in the morning, carry very little, keep your phone in a front pocket, and treat it as an experience rather than a shopping trip.

Practical tips

- Use ride-hailing apps between neighborhoods; the shopping areas are spread out.
