São Paulo is magnificent and relentless — a city of 12 million that never quite exhales. After a few days of museums, tasting menus and Jardins boutiques, you will want greenery, sea air or a cobbled square. The good news: some of Brazil’s most charming escapes are within a couple of hours of the city.
Here are the best day trips from São Paulo, from closest to farthest. One warning: São Paulo traffic is legendary, so leave early and avoid Friday-evening departures.
Embu das Artes (about 30 km)
A colorful colonial town known for its huge weekend arts and crafts fair, which takes over much of the center with ceramics, furniture, textiles and antiques. Go on Saturday or Sunday, wander the lanes and stop for lunch on the square. It is the easiest half-day escape from the city.
Santana de Parnaíba (about 40 km)
One of the best-preserved historic centers in the state, with colonial houses, small museums and a slow, small-town rhythm — a lovely contrast to São Paulo’s skyline.
São Roque wine route (about 1 hour)
West of the city, São Roque’s Roteiro do Vinho strings together dozens of wineries, restaurants and farm shops. Book a driver so everyone can taste.
Santos (about 1.5 hours)
Down the mountains to the sea. Santos combines a long city beach and its record-breaking seafront gardens with the historic center and the grand old Coffee Exchange, now the Museu do Café, a nod to the port’s role in Brazil’s coffee boom.
Holambra (about 2.5 hours)
Brazil’s flower capital, founded by Dutch immigrants, with windmills, flower fields and the Expoflora festival in spring (around September). Picture-perfect and very different from anything else near São Paulo.
Campos do Jordão (about 3 hours)
High in the Serra da Mantiqueira, this alpine-style mountain town is where paulistanos go for fondue, chalets and crisp air. It is doable as a long day trip with an early start, but better as an overnight. June and July bring the famous winter classical music festival — and higher prices.
Make it a weekend: Ilhabela
The island of Ilhabela, reached by ferry from São Sebastião, has some of the state’s most beautiful beaches — but at around four hours each way including the ferry, it deserves at least two nights.
