Jet Set LatAM · Solo Travel
Belize is one of the easiest countries in the region to travel alone: English is the official language, the US dollar is widely accepted, and distances are short. Its jungle heart is the Cayo District around San Ignacio, a friendly market town surrounded by rivers, Maya temples and some of Central America’s most romantic jungle lodges. Romantic works solo too, by the way. More hammock for you.
Where to base yourself
Stay in San Ignacio town for cafés, guides and budget-friendly guesthouses, or at a lodge along the Macal River or in the Mountain Pine Ridge for the full jungle experience.
Boutique jungle lodges
The Lodge at Chaa Creek is a long-loved riverside eco-lodge with cottages, a spa and its own nature reserve. Blancaneaux Lodge, Francis Ford Coppola’s retreat in the Mountain Pine Ridge, offers cabanas by a waterfall-fed river and an Italian-leaning restaurant. Both arrange guided excursions, ideal when you’re traveling alone.
Eating alone
San Ignacio’s restaurants and street stalls are casual and welcoming. Try stewed chicken with rice and beans, fry jacks at breakfast and fresh fruit from the Saturday market, one of the liveliest in the country.
Solo-friendly experiences
Visit the hilltop temple of Xunantunich, the in-town ruins of Cahal Pech and, with a licensed guide, swim and scramble through Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), a cave full of Maya ceremonial artifacts. Our San Ignacio guide covers more.
