Jet Set LatAM · Solo Travel
Mazatlán is a real Mexican port city that happens to have a beautiful old town and an endless Pacific promenade. Skip the resort strip and stay in the restored Centro Histórico, where pastel townhouses, a 19th-century opera house and plaza cafés make it feel more like a small European city with better seafood. It’s relaxed, affordable and a great solo beach-and-culture mix.
Where to base yourself
The Centro Histórico and the Olas Altas waterfront are the most charming bases. The Zona Dorada has the larger beach hotels.
Boutique hotels
Casa Lucila is an intimate boutique hotel facing the ocean on Olas Altas, with a rooftop pool. Melville Suites occupies a restored historic building with courtyard suites in the old town. Our Mazatlán historic center guide has more.
Eating alone
Mazatlán is shrimp country. Order aguachile, ceviche and pescado zarandeado at a seafood spot, and spend an evening on the terrace cafés of Plazuela Machado, the old town’s heart.
Solo-friendly experiences
Walk or bike the malecón, one of the longest seaside promenades in the region, catch a performance at the Teatro Ángela Peralta, watch the cliff divers, and take a short boat to Stone Island for a beach day. Carnaval, before Lent, is one of Mexico’s biggest.
