If Tulum is the mood board and Cancún is the resort, Playa del Carmen is the practical one, and practical is great when you’re traveling alone. It’s walkable, well connected, full of restaurants and beach clubs, and sits in the middle of the Riviera Maya, so cenotes, Cozumel, Akumal and Tulum are all easy day trips.
Where to base yourself
Stay a block or two off Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) between roughly Calle 20 and Calle 40, close to the beach but away from the late-night noise. Compare bases in our Playa del Carmen and Quinta Avenida guide.
A garden B&B and boutique stays
La Semilla is the solo traveler’s dream: a small, beautifully styled B&B a short walk from the beach, with a communal breakfast and hosts full of tips. Thompson Playa del Carmen brings a rooftop pool and design-hotel polish in the center. For a splurge, Hotel Esencia, a former private estate on the beach at Xpu-Ha south of town, is pure barefoot luxury.
Eating alone
Playa has a huge range: tacos al pastor on the street, seafood on the beach and lively dining blocks just off Fifth. Bar seating is everywhere, and beach clubs are easy places to spend an afternoon solo.
Solo-friendly experiences
Take the ferry to Cozumel for world-class reef diving or snorkeling, swim with sea turtles responsibly at Akumal, join a small-group tour of the area’s cenotes, and head south for the ruins of Tulum.
Solo safety, the practical version
- Watch your phone and drink on Fifth Avenue at night, as in any busy tourist strip.
- Use official taxis or ride apps and agree the fare first.
- Check sargassum reports in warmer months.
What to pack
- Packing cubes: swim, linen and a beach-club look
- Cashmere travel wrap: for the ferry and the plane
- Leather loafers: dinner on Fifth
