Jet Set LatAM · Solo Travel
Lake Atitlán is ringed by three volcanoes and a dozen Maya villages, each with its own personality, and the only commute is a boat ride across one of the most beautiful lakes on earth. It’s a place where solo travelers slow down without meaning to: a morning of yoga, an afternoon in a weaving cooperative, an evening on a terrace watching the volcanoes turn pink. Fair warning, people do extend their stays here.
Which village to choose
Santa Catarina Palopó and the eastern shore are the quiet, polished choice. San Marcos La Laguna is the wellness village of yoga and meditation. San Juan La Laguna is known for art and natural-dye weaving cooperatives. Panajachel is the transport hub, practical rather than pretty. Cliffside hamlets like Jaibalito and Tzununá are reached by boat and wonderfully peaceful.
Boutique lodges and guesthouses
Casa Palopó in Santa Catarina is the lake’s most elegant small hotel, with lake-view rooms and a dreamy terrace (our Casa Palopó guide). Casa del Mundo clings to the cliffs near Jaibalito, with rooms stepping down to the water. Laguna Lodge is an eco-lodge set in a nature reserve on the northern shore, and Hotel Atitlán in Panajachel has famously lush gardens on the lakefront.
Solo-friendly experiences
Hop between villages by public lancha, visit the women-run weaving and dye cooperatives of San Juan La Laguna, take a drop-in class in San Marcos, and see the market and church of Santiago Atitlán with a local guide. For the view of your life, do the Indian Nose sunrise hike with a registered guide.
Solo safety, the practical version
- Travel by boat in the morning. Afternoon winds, called the Xocomil, can make crossings rough.
- Boats stop running in the evening, so plan to be at your village before dark.
- Hike only with registered local guides, especially for sunrise trails.
- Book a tourist shuttle from Antigua; the trip takes about three hours.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: lake mornings and boat rides are chilly
- Packing cubes: because you’ll carry your bag onto the boat
- Leather loafers: for dinner on the terrace
