Jet Set LatAM · Mexico
Veracruz is where Mexico’s cooking first met the Spanish, the Caribbean and Africa, and you can taste every chapter of that history in one lunch. It’s seafood country on the coast, coffee country in the misty hills, and somehow both run on the same rule: sit down, take your time, order one more round.
I followed that rule enthusiastically. My jeans did not.
The port: café culture and the classics
Begin at the Gran Café de La Parroquia, the legendary portside café where you order a lechero and tap your spoon on the glass to summon the waiter with hot milk. Then go for Veracruz’s signature dishes: huachinango a la veracruzana (red snapper with tomato, olives, capers and chiles — Spain on a plate, Mexico in the sauce), arroz a la tumbada, a brothy seafood rice, and vuelve a la vida, the cocktail of oysters, shrimp and octopus that promises to bring you back to life.
It works. Our Veracruz travel guide maps the port and Boca del Río.
Mandinga and Boca del Río: seafood by the water
South of the city, Boca del Río is the modern seafood strip, and a little farther along, the lagoon village of Mandinga is lined with palapa restaurants serving fresh oysters, ceviche and whole fried fish, often with live jarana music. Go for a long weekend lunch and take a boat ride on the lagoon between courses.
Xalapa: museum, cafés and a university-town table
Up in the hills, the state capital Xalapa is home to the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa, one of Mexico’s great museums, with colossal Olmec heads set in light-filled galleries. Stay for the café scene and a dinner in one of the city’s creative kitchens.
Coatepec and Xico: coffee country
Coatepec, a Pueblo Mágico wrapped in cloud forest, is Veracruz’s coffee town. Visit a coffee finca to see the bean-to-cup process, then sit in the plaza with a cup grown a few kilometers away.
Nearby Xico is famous for its sweet, complex mole xiqueño. Sleep in a hacienda or boutique stay — our boutique hotels in Veracruz, Xalapa and Coatepec has the picks.
How to eat Veracruz well
- Make lunch the main meal. Seafood restaurants are at their best at midday.
- Buy coffee direct. Fincas sell whole beans; ask about roast dates and ship-home options.
- Pace the coast and the hills. The port is hot and humid; Xalapa and Coatepec are cool and misty. Pack for both.
- Pair with the music. Danzón nights in the port and son jarocho in Tlacotalpan; see Sound Bound 2027.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: for Coatepec’s cool, misty evenings
- Packing cubes: leave room for coffee beans
