Veracruz rewards travelers who skip the chain towers. The state’s most memorable stays are small and full of history: a grand hotel on the port’s main square, colonial inns in the cloud-forest capital, coffee-town courtyards in Coatepec and a minimalist beach hideaway on the Gulf. Here is where to sleep, region by region. New to the state? Start with our Veracruz travel guide.
Veracruz City: Gran Hotel Diligencias
On the zócalo, Gran Hotel Diligencias is the port’s historic grande dame, steps from the cathedral, the arcades and the weekend danzón. Book a room facing the square and you’ll hear the marimbas from your balcony. It is the classic choice for anyone who wants the city center at the door rather than the beach towers of Boca del Río.
Xalapa: Mesón del Alférez
In the capital, Mesón del Alférez (Sebastián Camacho 2) is a small hotel with colonial history and boutique character in the walkable center, close to cafés, the cathedral and Parque Juárez. Its founders also run sister properties in Xalapa and Coatepec — handy if you want to split your stay between the city and the coffee country.
Coatepec: coffee-town courtyards
Coatepec is the place to slow down. Posada Coatepec (Calle Hidalgo 9) is a colonial inn built around gardens and courtyards, long a favorite of guidebook editors. Hotel Casa Real del Café, with just 17 rooms in colonial-style architecture, puts you in the heart of town near the plaza and cafés. For something more rural, Finca de la Niebla sits among the coffee and mist on the edge of town. Spend the morning on a coffee-farm tour and the afternoon doing absolutely nothing.
The Gulf coast: Azúcar
North of the port, on the Costa Esmeralda near Monte Gordo, Azúcar is a member of Design Hotels: whitewashed, thatched bungalows facing the Gulf, built in the spirit of the sugar plantations that gave the hotel its name. It pairs well with a visit to El Tajín and the Voladores of Papantla.
