Most travelers know Barranquilla for one week a year: Carnival, recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The rest of the year, Colombia’s fourth city is a warm, music-mad port on the Magdalena River that rewards a few days of exploring.
Here are the best things to do in Barranquilla, in and out of Carnival season.
Carnival, all year round
If you can’t make it in February or early March, the Casa del Carnaval and the carnival museum show off costumes, masks and the dance traditions of marimondas, congos and garabatos. In the nearby town of Galapa, artisans carve and paint the wooden masks worn in the parades, a beautiful thing to bring home.
The Gran Malecón and the river
The Gran Malecón del Río runs for kilometers along the Magdalena, with restaurants, playgrounds and sunset views; it’s also home to the giant statue of Barranquilla’s most famous daughter, Shakira. Take a boat to Bocas de Ceniza, where the river meets the Caribbean.
Museums and architecture
The Museo del Caribe tells the story of Colombia’s Caribbean region, from Indigenous cultures to Gabriel García Márquez, who lived and wrote in Barranquilla. Wander the El Prado neighborhood for early 20th-century republican and art deco houses.
Where to eat and stay
Barranquilla’s cooking is coastal and generous: arroz de coco, fried fish, butifarra sausages and bollos of corn and yuca. Narcobollo is a beloved restaurant for modern takes on Caribbean classics. For a stay with history, the Hotel El Prado, opened in 1930, has palm-shaded gardens and a grand colonnaded pool.
Good to know
- Advisory. Colombia carries a US Level 3 advisory (reconsider travel) as of March 2026, with stricter levels for specific departments; Barranquilla is not singled out. Check your own government’s guidance.
- Carnival. Book hotels months ahead for Carnival, held in the days before Ash Wednesday.
- Heat. It’s hot year-round; plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and evening.
- Day trips. Cartagena is about two hours west and Santa Marta about two hours east.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: a blanket on the plane, a shawl at dinner
- Leather loafers: polished enough for dinner, sane on cobblestones
- Packing cubes: so the artisan finds fit on the way home
