Jet Set LatAM · Hotel Review
When Barranquilla was Colombia’s busiest port and its gateway to the world, the Hotel El Prado was where everyone stayed. Opened in 1930 in the leafy El Prado neighborhood, it’s a grand white landmark with palm-lined grounds, arcades and a famous pool, and it remains the city’s most atmospheric address.
Here’s our Hotel El Prado review and how it fits a trip to Barranquilla.
The building
The hotel’s Spanish-revival architecture, with arches, tiled roofs and wide verandas, is a piece of the city’s golden age. Wander the lobby and gardens even if you’re not staying; they’re part of Barranquilla’s history.
The rooms and pool
Rooms range from classic to renovated; ask for an updated room when you book. The large pool, ringed by palms, is the hotel’s social heart and a welcome escape from the Caribbean heat.
The neighborhood
El Prado was Colombia’s first planned garden suburb, with mansions and tree-shaded avenues. The Museo del Caribe, the Carnival house and the restaurants of the north are a short taxi ride away.
