Find your corner of Floripa: lagoon life, Atlantic surf and long seafood lunches.
Florianópolis — “Floripa” to Brazilians — is a state capital that happens to sit mostly on an island. Santa Catarina Island has dozens of beaches, a big saltwater lagoon, forested hills and fishing villages settled by Azorean immigrants, all within an hour or so of each other. It is where Brazilians go for surf, seafood and long summer nights.

Where to stay
- Lagoa da Conceição — the island’s social center, around the lagoon: restaurants, bars and easy access to both east- and south-coast beaches.
- Jurerê Internacional — the polished north, with calm water, beach clubs and a glossier scene.
- Campeche and the south — quieter and wilder, with long beaches and a more village feel.
The beaches
The east coast faces the open Atlantic, so beaches like Joaquina and Praia Mole draw surfers — Joaquina also backs onto sand dunes where you can try sandboarding. The north is calmer and warmer for swimming. In the south, trails lead to more remote coves. Our Florianópolis beach guide goes deeper.
What to eat
Florianópolis is known for its oysters, farmed in the calm bays on the island’s western side — the old Azorean village of Santo Antônio de Lisboa is a lovely place to try them at sunset. Otherwise, think fresh fish, shrimp and long beach lunches.
Plan a seafood outing or a market-and-design day with our Florianópolis food and craft guide, including official restaurant links and local-making traditions.
When to go
Summer, from December to March, is peak season: hot, lively and busy, with higher prices. The shoulder months either side are quieter and still warm enough for the beach, while winter (June to August) is cool and calm.
Getting there and around
Florianópolis has its own international airport with frequent flights from São Paulo and Rio. A car makes it much easier to explore the island’s spread-out beaches.
