The airport journey starts with the right address
Juan Santamaría International Airport, SJO, is in Alajuela, not in downtown San José. Costa Rica’s official travel resources distinguish the country’s international gateways. Give your driver or transfer operator the actual accommodation address and entrance, not just the city name.
For a late arrival, arrange how you will recognize the driver, where you will meet and what happens if the flight is delayed. Confirm the total, luggage capacity and child-seat needs before booking. Save the contact details offline. Do the reverse calculation before departure: check in with the airline and allow for traffic, rather than recycling a transfer time from a quiet arrival day.
Walk the historic center in clusters
The official downtown map helps group Plaza de la Cultura, the theatre and central museums. Choose a few nearby stops in daylight, then pause for a meal. Central-city walking is most useful when you have a purpose and a clear return route, rather than when you try to cross every neighborhood on foot.
Expect uneven pavements, busy crossings and changing weather. Keep your phone discreet and stop inside a public venue when you need to study the map. Ask your accommodation which entrance is easiest to reach and which evening route they recommend. If a member of your group needs smooth, step-free access, confirm each venue and consider vehicle transfers between walking sections.
Taxis and arranged cars: make pickup unambiguous
For a journey with bags, after dark or through an unfamiliar area, an arranged vehicle can simplify the day. Ask the hotel to help identify a licensed taxi or established transfer provider. Confirm how the fare is calculated before setting off; a quoted transfer and a metered street journey may work differently.
Write down a landmark and the exact side of the street for pickup. Pedestrian streets may require meeting a car at a nearby vehicle-accessible corner. Keep the driver’s contact until you are at the destination, and do not leave valuables behind while sorting bags. For dinner plans, decide on the return before the evening begins.
Buses: choose the route before the stop
A bus can be useful for a specific journey, but San José’s services should not be treated as one terminal with one simple citywide ticket. Ask for the operator, departure point, destination displayed on the vehicle, accepted payment and last practical return. Carry small change if the service requires cash.
For an onward trip outside the city, confirm the terminal with the operator and allow time to reach it. Similar destination names and several central pickup locations can create mistakes. Keep luggage close, avoid displaying valuables and ask before boarding if you are uncertain. A cheaper ticket loses its advantage if it sends you to the wrong place.
Trains and rental cars: useful for the right journey
Check INCOFER’s current service information before building a train into your plans. Confirm the route, station, operating day and return; do not assume a timetable from a weekday commute applies to a weekend visit. A station in Alajuela is not an airport-terminal arrival, so map any final connection separately.
A rental car is worth considering for a wider itinerary, but compare parking, rental terms and road plans before keeping one for a city-only stay. For a two-day capital visit, walking clusters and well-chosen transfers may be easier. The aim is to spend the day in the places you came to see, with transport doing its job quietly in the background.
