eÑe: start with Costa Rican design
Costa Rica’s Ministry of Culture identifies Tienda eÑe as a design shop in the Carmen district. The city tourism directory describes its focus on local designers, including clothing, jewelry, accessories and objects for the home. Check its current storefront and hours before making a dedicated journey.
Go with a short wish list, perhaps a pair of earrings or one piece that fits your wardrobe. Ask who designed it, where it was made and what materials it uses. Locally designed and locally manufactured are different claims; a useful shop conversation makes both clear without turning a small purchase into an interrogation.
AIRE: browse before arranging pickup
AIRE presents home design made in Costa Rica. Its site lists pickup through Del Barrio in Escalante. Confirm the exact location, whether your item must be ordered beforehand and when it will be ready. A pickup arrangement is not the same as a shop where the full online collection is always available to browse.
For a ceramic or other fragile object, ask about weight, protective packaging and whether a replacement can be shipped if necessary. Measure the space you have at home before buying a larger piece. A beautiful bowl that survives the journey and becomes part of breakfast is a more satisfying souvenir than an impractical object purchased in a hurry.
Build two short outings instead of one long shopping march
Group a confirmed Carmen-area visit with your central-city cultural plans. Put Escalante pickup or browsing beside a café break on another part of the day. Pin confirmed addresses and compare transfers before booking a meal. Shops mentioned in the same guide need not be next-door neighbors.
Allow time to return to one store after thinking about a purchase. Photograph a label with permission and note the size, price and maker. If something is handmade in a small run, ask whether it can be held briefly rather than assuming it will be there tomorrow. Buy because it suits you, not because scarcity has made the choice feel urgent.
What to ask before paying
For jewelry, ask about the metal, finishes and care. For clothing, inspect seams and try sitting or moving in it, not just standing at the mirror. For a textile, ask about fiber content, washing and possible color transfer. A product’s national identity does not remove the need for these everyday checks.
Read the return policy, request a receipt and confirm the final currency and amount before completing payment. Commissioned or personalized pieces may have different terms. If you are ordering later delivery, put the promised dispatch date, shipping cost and contact details in writing.
Packing the purchase and supporting the maker
Keep fragile pieces cushioned and carry valuable small items with you. Ask your airline about the size and weight limits that apply to your ticket; extra shopping room can disappear quickly once packaging is added. For natural materials, check the import rules at home before committing to a purchase.
If you want to share the find, ask how the maker prefers to be credited and whether photographs are welcome. Avoid presenting an object as belonging to a particular Indigenous tradition unless its provenance is explained by the maker. A considered shopping day ends with fewer, better choices and a story you can tell accurately.
