Set the order around opening days
Start by checking the National Theatre’s visitor information and the National Museum’s current calendar. Their availability should shape the order of your city days. This is a suggested plan, not a promise that every stop is open on every date.
Choose a hotel using the first-timer guide and save the exact entrance. Keep the day of arrival lighter if your flight or onward journey leaves you with only part of a day. The itinerary works better when you remove a stop than when you compress every pause.
Day one, morning: the theatre and the central city
Begin with the National Theatre if its visiting arrangements fit your date, then leave time to look around the central city. Decide in advance whether you want a building visit or a performance; those are different bookings, not interchangeable ways to enter at any time.
Keep the morning focused on this part of San José. The official walking guide helps with orientation, but use current venue information for access and services. A short, attentive walk beats an overfilled list of facades.
Day one, afternoon: choose a museum and a market pause
Give the National Museum a proper block of time if its calendar fits. Decide where a visit to Mercado Central belongs around that anchor, checking current market arrangements before relying on it for lunch. These are distinct stops; use a map to choose the order from your starting point.
Browse menus before ordering and leave room for a break. If you prefer a longer museum visit, shorten the market outing rather than racing through both. Keep the evening uncomplicated, particularly if the next morning is your first chance to explore Escalante.
Day two, morning: coffee with time to enjoy it
Make Cafeoteca in Barrio Escalante the coffee anchor, at Calle 31 and Avenida 5. Ask what is being served and choose a preparation you are curious about. If buying beans, explain how you brew at home so the purchase fits your routine.
Then choose one design stop from the companion food and shopping guide. Confirm its exact location and opening details before setting out, particularly for stores listed through a directory or pickup arrangement. This is deliberately a small edit rather than a shopping marathon.
Day two, evening: a separate Barrio Amón plan
If a restaurant-led evening appeals, research Silvestre in Barrio Amón and book the current dining option that suits you. Treat the move from Escalante to Amón as a separate journey, with enough margin to arrive comfortably.
Prefer a looser day? Stay with a casual meal near your base and move the restaurant to another visit. The useful part of this itinerary is its neighborhood structure; no single reservation is required for it to work.
Leave well, without an airport scramble
SJO is in Alajuela, as explained in Costa Rica’s travel resources. Arrange that transfer separately and use current conditions rather than a fixed time copied from a blog. If your departure is early, remove the final outing. Continue into the country itinerary when you have additional days, instead of squeezing a distant excursion into this city break.
