New Year’s Day 2027 in San Juan: Old San Juan streets while the forts are closed

The most important January 1 planning detail in San Juan is a closure: the National Park Service lists New Year’s Day among the closed days for San Juan National Historic Site. Do not plan to enter El Morro or Castillo San Cristóbal that day. Build the outing around city streets, a confirmed meal and, if conditions suit, time near the coast.
Enjoy Old San Juan without a fort ticket
Choose a compact street route and appreciate the historic setting from public areas. Do not assume access through closed gates or treat every outdoor area of the national historic site as available. Follow posted restrictions and keep your itinerary flexible.
Comfortable shoes matter on uneven surfaces. Ask about a shorter route and convenient drop-off if steps or extended walking would be difficult. Plan a confirmed café stop rather than relying on finding one open when you need a break.
Reserve a holiday lunch directly
Discover Puerto Rico publishes guidance on holiday openings, but a restaurant listed for an earlier season is not a January 1, 2027 confirmation. Contact the venue for that exact date and ask about the menu, kitchen hours, deposit and accessibility.
A reserved meal is more useful than a list of supposedly open restaurants copied from an old guide. Keep the afternoon loose enough to rest after the previous evening.
Beach time is conditional
If you choose Condado or Ocean Park, assess the sea and follow posted warnings and lifeguard instructions. A coastal walk is an alternative when swimming is unsuitable. Do not let a clear sky stand in for a check of water conditions.
Keep other festivities on their own dates
Three Kings celebrations and the San Sebastián festivities belong to other dates, not automatically January 1. This guide is for New Year’s Day itself. Save the forts and any separately scheduled festival for a visit that matches their confirmed opening or programme.
