Jet Set LatAM · Solo Travel
Los Cabos has a reputation for spring-break energy and all-inclusive towers, but the solo traveler’s secret is San José del Cabo: a colonial-era town of galleries, palm-shaded plazas and small hotels, with excellent restaurants and a calmer pace. Stay there, visit Cabo San Lucas for the boat trips, and you’ll get the best of both.
Where to base yourself
Choose San José del Cabo‘s historic center or the nearby La Playita marina area. Cabo San Lucas is livelier and more party-oriented; the Tourist Corridor between them is resort territory.
Boutique hideaways
Hotel El Ganzo at La Playita is an art-and-music boutique with a rooftop pool and recording studio (our El Ganzo review). Casa Natalia, steps from San José’s main plaza, is an intimate, adults-oriented boutique hotel. More picks in our best boutique hotels in Los Cabos.
Eating alone
Book a garden dinner at Flora Farms, the organic farm restaurant in the foothills, and grab a bar seat in San José’s historic center. Thursday nights bring the Art Walk, when galleries open late and the streets fill with music.
Solo-friendly experiences
Take a small-group boat trip to El Arco and Lover’s Beach, snorkel at Santa María or Chileno bays, and from December to April join a whale-watching tour. Add a day trip north to Todos Santos.
Solo safety, the practical version
- Many Cabo beaches are unsafe for swimming. Stick to designated swimmable bays like Chileno and Santa María.
- Pre-book your airport transfer and walk past timeshare sellers in arrivals.
- Use ride apps or hotel taxis at night in Cabo San Lucas.
What to pack
- Packing cubes: swimwear, linen and an Art Walk outfit
- Cashmere travel wrap: desert evenings cool off
- Leather loafers: for San José’s plazas
