Acapulco was the original Mexican Riviera: Hollywood honeymoons, cliffside villas and the bay that defined jet-set glamour in the 1950s. Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm, devastated the city in October 2023, and Hurricane John followed in 2024. Since then, much of the hotel zone has been rebuilt and several of its most famous properties have reopened.
This is an honest 2026 update: what’s back, what makes Acapulco special and what you need to weigh before booking.
What has reopened
Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués, the cliffside villa resort above Puerto Marqués, reopened in early 2025 after extensive renovation. Las Brisas Acapulco, famous for its pink casitas and private pools, and Camino Real Acapulco Diamante, on the cliffs over Puerto Marqués bay, are back, along with the large Palacio Mundo Imperial on the Riviera Diamante. Confirm amenities when you book: restaurants and beach clubs reopened in stages.
The three Acapulcos
Acapulco Diamante, southeast toward the airport, holds the newer resorts and Puerto Marqués. Acapulco Dorado is the Costera Miguel Alemán along the main bay. Acapulco Tradicional, the old town, is home to La Quebrada and the classic 1950s hotels.
The cliff divers of La Quebrada
Since the 1930s, the clavadistas of La Quebrada have dived from ledges about 35 meters above a narrow ocean inlet, timing their jumps to the incoming waves. Evening dives are the most dramatic; go with an organized excursion or hotel transport.
Guerrero cooking and craft
Thursday is jueves pozolero in Guerrero, when restaurants serve green pozole with chicharrón and avocado. Try pescado a la talla, butterflied fish grilled with chili paste, at a beachside palapa. For craft, look for lacquered boxes from Olinalá and silver from Taxco, the state’s celebrated silver town.
Good to know
- Arrival. Fly into Acapulco International (ACA) and use hotel transfers.
- Season. December to April is dry and sunny; hurricane season runs June to November.
- Sunset. Pie de la Cuesta, a lagoon-backed beach north of the bay, is famous for sunsets; go with a driver.
- Swimming. Some open-ocean beaches have strong currents; protected Puerto Marqués is calmer.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: a blanket on the plane, a shawl at dinner
- Leather loafers: polished enough for dinner, sane on cobblestones
- Packing cubes: so the artisan finds fit on the way home
