A wedding in Cartagena, Tulum, San Miguel de Allende or Trancoso is a gift and a puzzle. The invitation says “cocktail” or “black tie optional,” the forecast says 32°C and humid, the ceremony is in a colonial church and the party is on the sand. Latin American weddings also run late — dinner at ten, dancing until dawn. Here is how to dress for all of it, comfortably and beautifully.
Decode the dress code, then add the climate
- Black tie / formal. Long dresses or elegant jumpsuits; dark or light suits for men, tie expected. In the heat, choose silk, crepe or fine linen blends over heavy satin.
- Cocktail. Midi or knee-length dresses, smart separates; suits or tailored linen for men.
- Beach formal / “tropical chic.” Flowing maxi dresses, prints and color are welcome; for men, linen suits, or the guayabera, which is accepted formalwear in much of the Caribbean and the Yucatán.
- Avoid white and ivory unless the couple asks, and check whether the couple has a color theme.
Cartagena: churches, cobblestones and heat
Many Cartagena weddings begin in a colonial church in the walled city and move to a courtyard, rooftop or island venue. Cover your shoulders for the church with a light wrap, choose block heels or wedges for the cobblestones and pick fabrics that breathe — evening humidity barely drops. Colombian designers excel at this: think Johanna Ortiz ruffles, Silvia Tcherassi’s fluid evening dresses and statement earrings by Mercedes Salazar. Our Cartagena designer boutiques guide is useful if you want to shop on arrival.
Tulum and the Riviera Maya: sand and jungle
Tulum weddings often take place on the beach or in jungle venues lit by candles. Leave stilettos at home: flat sandals, espadrilles or low wedges work on sand and stone. Light, airy maxi dresses in prints or earthy tones photograph beautifully; bring insect repellent and a small fan. Men can go for linen suits without a tie unless the invitation says otherwise.
Trancoso, San Miguel and the highlands
In Trancoso, the dress code is barefoot luxury: linen, kaftans and Brazilian prints, with flat sandals for the grass of the Quadrado. In San Miguel de Allende and other highland towns, days are warm and nights are cool — bring a wrap or jacket and walkable heels for steep cobbled streets. For Andean celebrations in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, layer: altitude evenings are cold.

Where to stay in Cartagena
For a Cartagena wedding, staying inside the walled city puts churches, courtyards and rooftops within walking distance. Hotel Casa San Agustín, set in restored colonial houses, is a favorite for wedding guests.
