Jet Set LatAM · Designer Hotels and Quiet Luxury
Chiloé runs on its own time: mist, wooden churches, colorful stilt houses and an island culture told through the hands. Refugia Chiloé, on the Rilán Peninsula a short drive from Castro, translates that identity into quiet luxury better than anywhere else. It opened as Refugia, operated for years as Tierra Chiloé, and in 2025 returned to its original name under its founders.
Stilt-house architecture
Designed by Chilean architect Patricio Browne, the building rises on stilts like the fishermen’s palafitos and is clad in alerce shingles — the same technique that covers the archipelago’s UNESCO-listed wooden churches. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto the inland sea, wetlands and green hills.
Wool, basketry and wood
Inside: native woods, wool weavings, basketry and carvings by island artisans. Nothing looks bought for effect; everything points to Chilote life, to sheep and forest. It is the kind of interior that asks for a fire, a book and rain on the windows.
Chiloé, unhurried
The hotel runs daily guided outings to discover the island: churches, walks, birdwatching and coastal scenery. Alternate an active day with a spa-and-pool day; the idea isn’t to “do” Chiloé but to let it reveal itself. Castro, with its stilt houses and market, is a short drive away.
Who Refugia Chiloé is for
