The Galápagos are one of the few places where children can stand a few steps from a giant tortoise or a sea lion pup and simply watch. The trick is choosing a trip style that fits your children’s ages and stamina.

Cruise or land-based?
A small expedition cruise moves between islands at night and lands somewhere new each morning, which older children usually love. Most Galápagos cruises ask that children be at least six, and family departures fill early, so check the minimum age for your dates before you fall for an itinerary.
A land-based trip, staying on Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal or Isabela, is easier with toddlers: a fixed bed, a pool or beach in the afternoon, and day trips you can skip if someone is tired. It also lets you control how long each outing lasts.
Where children meet giant tortoises
The Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora is walkable from town, mostly flat and shaded, and shows tortoises from hatchlings to adults — an easy first visit for small children. In the Santa Cruz highlands, about half an hour from Puerto Ayora, wild tortoises wander open farmland; visits usually take one to two hours on flat, sometimes muddy paths.
On Isabela, the breeding center near Puerto Villamil is often quieter, and the walk there passes a lagoon where flamingos are often seen.
Gentle water time
Many beaches and bays have calm, shallow water where children can watch fish, rays and sea lions from the shore or with a mask. Rash guards help with both sun and cool water. Always follow your naturalist guide’s instructions on where to swim.
Rules every child should know
Galápagos National Park rules are part of the experience: stay on marked trails, keep about two meters from wildlife, never touch or feed animals and take nothing away. Explaining the “why” before landing turns rules into a game children enjoy policing.
Fees and paperwork
Foreign visitors pay a national park entrance fee on arrival — currently reported as US$200 for adults and US$100 for children under 12 — plus a US$20 transit control card bought at the Quito or Guayaquil airport before the flight. Bring clean US dollar bills and confirm current amounts with your operator before you travel.
