Why Chichén Itzá matters
UNESCO inscribed the Pre-Hispanic City of Chichén Itzá in 1988. One of the great centers of the Maya world, it shows architecture that blends Maya and central Mexican traditions — from the pyramid of El Castillo, built as a calendar in stone, to the Great Ball Court and the Sacred Cenote.
Tickets and hours in 2026
The site is open daily from 8am to 5pm, with last entry around 4pm. Admission combines a Yucatán state fee and a federal INAH fee — reported at about MXN 646 for foreign adults in 2026 — and children under 13 enter free. Prices change, so confirm before you go.
What to see in three hours
Allow about three hours: El Castillo (Kukulcán), the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors with its colonnades, and the walk to the Sacred Cenote. Climbing El Castillo has been prohibited since 2006.
The equinox serpent
Around the spring and autumn equinoxes, late-afternoon light creates the shadow of a serpent descending El Castillo’s stairway. Crowds on the equinox itself are enormous; the effect is often visible for several days before and after.
Beat the crowds
Tour buses from Cancún tend to arrive mid-morning, and midday heat is intense. Stay overnight in Valladolid, about 40 minutes away, and arrive at opening. Cenote Ik Kil, a few kilometers away, is best visited early too.
