Where to stay
Stay by the beach. Ipanema and Leblon are the most stylish and walkable, with the best restaurants and shops. Copacabana has the grand hotels and more choice. All three put you close to the metro and an easy ride from the sights.
Day one: Ipanema, Leblon and Arpoador
Spend the first day on the sand. Rent a chair and umbrella from a beach vendor, order a coconut and let the day happen. Each stretch of Ipanema has its own crowd, marked by numbered lifeguard posts.
In the afternoon, browse the boutiques of Ipanema and Leblon, then walk to the Arpoador rock for sunset. People applaud when the sun goes down. You will too.
Day two: Christ the Redeemer and Santa Teresa
Go to Christ the Redeemer early. The cog train up Corcovado is the classic route; buy tickets online for a timed departure and check the forecast, because clouds can hide the view completely.
Afterwards, head to hilly Santa Teresa for artists’ studios, bars and long lunches, then walk down to the tiled Escadaria Selarón. In the evening, Lapa is the place for samba. Take a car there and back.
Day three: green Rio and Sugarloaf
Spend the morning in the Jardim Botânico, with its avenue of royal palms, and next door at Parque Lage, where the café sits in the courtyard of a mansion under Corcovado.
End with Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar). The two cable cars take you up for sunset over Guanabara Bay. It is the best ending to a first trip to Rio.
Safety and getting around
- Carry only what you need on the beach; leave passports and jewelry in the hotel safe.
- Use ride-hailing apps at night and the metro in the day.
- Book Corcovado and Sugarloaf tickets online to skip the lines.
