Carnival Is a Community Before It Is a Visitor Experience

A visitor may encounter Carnival through a ticket, a hotel reservation or a striking photograph. That entry point is useful, but it is not the whole story. Make room in your attention for the people who organize, create, rehearse and welcome audiences into the celebration.

Choose how you spend

Where possible, buy directly from clearly identified organizers and makers. Read who is presenting an event and what the payment includes. A small purchase from a credited artisan can carry more meaning than a suitcase full of anonymous themed merchandise. Ask questions politely and accept that a busy person may not have time to teach you everything.

Be specific in your appreciation

Name a school or group when you can verify it. Avoid turning a neighborhood or performer into a picturesque background for your own story. If you are invited into a space, follow the host’s instructions. Use the municipal Carnival portal as a starting point for programs and context, then seek the people behind the event you choose.
