Five Carnival Words to Meet Before the Celebration
A few words can make a first encounter easier without turning preparation into homework. Start with escola de samba, bateria, enredo, samba-enredo and fantasia. In parade context, these point toward the school, percussion ensemble, theme, theme song and costume. They are useful entry points, not a complete vocabulary.
Connect a word to a question
For enredo, ask what story the school intends to tell. For bateria, listen before trying to identify every sound. For fantasia, look at the costumes as a group. LIESA’s judging material can help you see how aspects of the performance are considered separately. Use current school explanations for the particular parade you will attend.
Keep learning in context
Do not assume a short translation contains all the meaning of a term. Save a word when it becomes relevant and look for an explanation from practitioners. If you are sharing a photograph, use only the vocabulary you understand and the details you can verify. A modest, accurate caption is more valuable than a confident but invented description.
